ELEVEN

MONICA SPENT THE NEXT two days jumping at anything loud or unexpected. If someone walked around the corner and she didn’t hear them, she jumped. Guilt weighed heavy on her chest, and she wished she hadn’t seen and heard what she had. Because now she worried that Michael would know why she was really here. Although she needed Tony’s protection, she was also scared that Michael would somehow discover that Tony was helping her, and Michael would kill him, too. Her stomach rolled constantly, and she feared if something didn’t happen to Michael soon, she’d have ulcers.

Mary and the children acted normal around Monica, which made her a little less tense. She was still fearful something would happen at any moment to ruin it. Perhaps Tony and Anna were correct and that she should stop trying to find evidence on Michael. He was a gangster, and powerful men like that always won the battle.

Knowing that she was putting her life in danger and actually getting out of the situation was two different things. If she didn’t try to find some proof, who would? Norman hadn’t deserved to die, and justice needed to be served.

Today’s temperature was smoldering hot. Too hot to be in the house, yet too hot to be outside. She played with the children the best she could while they were in the pool, but the temperature in the air nearly suffocated her. She still didn’t dare join the children in the water, only because Michael and his men were around, and she didn’t want anyone ogling her. Not even Tony. It was unfortunate she couldn’t have Anna come over. At least the men would look at her cousin instead of Monica.

When the children splashed water on her, she laughed and enjoyed the cool liquid, but a minute later, the heat dried her clothes quickly. As the day drew to a close and the sun dipped in the horizon, she herded the children back into the house to ready them for bed. Unfortunately, the evening didn’t bring cooler temperatures.

She hadn’t seen Tony since he’d listened to her phone call with Anna. At first Monica was worried, but the children and Zambino wives had talked about seeing him, Monica knew he must be busy with Michael’s business. Still, she’d like to see Tony and make sure for herself that he wasn’t harmed.

Once the children were in bed, she stayed in her room. The balcony doors were wide open, but it didn’t cool down the humidity in her room. She removed her dress and socks and lay on her bed in just her underwear. Nothing seemed to make her feel any cooler as she tried to sleep.

Tossing and turning for a few hours only made her more irritable. Grumbling, she turned on the light and looked at the clock. Two-thirty in the morning. Heavens, if she didn’t get some sleep soon, she wouldn’t be alert for the children tomorrow. Knowing how she functioned when she was tired, she wouldn’t be any use to anyone.
